STURMINSTER & HINTON ANGLING ASSOCIATION

CENTENARY 2005/06

25 September 2005 Today Sturminster and Hinton AA held their Centenary Open match on the Stour. Over 80 anglers lined the banks between Hinton and Fiddleford and all caught, but the expected big weights didn't materialize as the bream decided not to cooperate on the day. Nevertheless, decent weights were taken from all areas with Yeovil-based Nick Ewers taking first place with 15lb 8ozs of roach. Preston Innovations Thatchers team member Nick was pegged two swims below the footbridge at Colber and took all his fish on red maggot or caster on the pole at around 11 metres. In second place Gillingham's Rob Mann drew the nice peg just above the bridge at Sturminster and, finding a little bit of flow in this shallower area, managed to coax 10 lbs of quality roach to the net with a decent chub making his total up to 12 and a half pounds. Having spent the last few years fishing commercial carp puddles in the Midlands, Rob enjoyed his first match on a river for several years, not to mention the pocket money he won for the runner-up spot. In third place Simon Hebditch had 11 lb of pole-caught roach from behind the garage on the Steart stretch of the river. It would be appropriate here to thank the club members who put in so much work to clear the swims in the days before the match, with special thanks to Brian Preston and Ian Paulley; if anyone wants to give Ian nightmares in the near future, just mention the word 'duckweed' to him.

Centenary celebrations. There will be a social evening and buffet at the Tithe Barn at Hinton on Saturday 13th August and all members are welcome; guests of members may also attend depending on places available. Call Teresa Goddard on 01258 472069 - you'll have to wait another hundred years for the next one!

The 100 peg match is arranged for Sunday 25 September, draw at Sturminster Football Club 08.30, fishing from 10.30 - 3.30pm. Entrance £15 optional super pool £5. Tickets from Ian Paulley 01258 861969.

The Association was formed on the 17th August 1905. There has been a longstanding relationship with the Pitt-Rivers family who continue to lease substantial parts of the upper Stour to the club. In particular S&HAA are grateful for the continuing interest shown by Mr G.A. L-F Pit-Rivers, our President.

A Centenary is a special occasion in the life of any organisation and the Committee hope that 2005 will provide something special for all members whether they be match or pleasure anglers, sit beside the log fire and talk about it anglers or just plain interested in what goes on in S&HAA.

Currently your committee are organising:

1.    A 100 peg match.

2.    A social evening in the Tythe Barn at Hinton. By kind courtesy of Mr & Mrs Pitt-Rivers this has now been booked for Saturday 13 August commencing at 7.30pm. Members will receive complimentary invitations.

3.    Various types of keep sake and clothing all inscribed with the Association's logo celebrating the centenary.

As previously circulated in the last two newsletters any member with any ideas should contact the Centenary Co-ordinator, Kevin Knapp on 01258 473417.
