Upstream of Sturminster Mill
Sturminster & Hinton Angling Association was formed on 17 August 1905 and it continues to offer good fishing to like minded folk on the upper reaches of the River Stour as well as providing 2 lake based fisheries in the area.
Much of the water continues to be leased courtesy of the Association's President, Mr G.A.L-F Pitt-Rivers whilst other riparian owners include other access. Members are now able to fish almost all of the River Stour between Splashes Copse north of Cut Mill at Hinton St Mary to Haywards Bridge just above the old railway station at Shillingstone. In addition there are other waters available on an exchange ticket basis and S&HAA are a member of the Somerset Levels Amalgamated Clubs. For details Click Here.
The Stour meanders through the Blackmore Vale and it is little wonder that the river found favour and provided such inspiration for the likes of Thomas Hardy and William Barnes.
The 3 major mills at Hinton (more recently damaged), Fiddleford and Sturminster are now sadly redundant but the latter does operate for a short period during the summer and the Sturminster Mill Trust attracts many visitors.
For those non fishing companions walks abound in this most beautiful part of Dorset.
